normally for lightsabers i just use some blur filters... for this one, though, i ended up blurring the blade and then "posterized" it in photoshop, and then i played around with opacities and stuff like that. really, my coloring jobs are just happy accidents. i lay down all the flats colors and basic shading, and then mess around with filters and different color settings until i find something that i think looks cool.
